AAWE Art Exhibitions

AAWE has many talented artists, sculptors, photographers and illustrators. We have begun a monthly exhibition in the AAWE Reception Room. The objectives are to give the membership a taste of the artwork of the member artists, and to help to create a network for artists and art lovers within AAWE.

Exhibit hours are Monday-Friday, from 10am to 5pm, except during French school vacations and scheduled room events. Please check the AAWE Events calendar.

Peggy Paul Cavallier (painter)
Drifting back through the cobwebs of time, the last time Peggy Paul-Cavallier exhibited with AAWE was at Beaubourg, as a young mother. Now, more than 30 years later, she’s back as the proud grandmother of Clémentine! Represented in this show are Rubenesque nudes from a week in the Lubéron, oils of la Montagne Sainte-Victoire, along with her traditional watercolors, drawings, inks and photos.

Dates: 1 - 30 June 2006

Harriet Frankel (painter)
“Les Mouettes” in Binic is still in the family and Harriet continued to paint there until the early 90’s when her eyesight began to fail. The watercolors and oil paintings on exhibit at AAWE (opening April 26th) cover a long period of activity but are very homogenous in style, all marked by Harriet’s firm hand and discerning vision as well as her passionate love of place: the ever changing view, Charles “the fisherman” crossing the port, the garden path, the open window.

Aviva Brooks Kruger (painter)
Aviva’s paintings are inspired by Hopper and Hockney. She captures a moment of everyday life and magnifies it. She considers herself a transplanted American who appeases her mal du pays by depicting scenes of her home country, urban architecture and people on the street.

Lindsey de Ovies (sculptor)
In 2000 when her kids finally began to have lives of their own, Lindsey realized it was time for her to do the same. Not wanting to return to the madness of her pre-baby career of fashion design, she discovered sculpting. Beginning in clay, she then began to experiment in wood, wax, bronze, cast glass and stone carving.
“Essentially my work questions all things conventional: commitment/responsibility, social integration, stereotype/identity, and all stages of maturing (birth, youth, marriage, family, mid-life, the randomness of death and beyond). Contrary to the way most artists work, my titles precede the actual piece and are usually triggered by the caption-like comments I mentally attach to my observations of life, love and the pursuit of happiness. The cliché “many a truth is said in jest” fairly sums up my creative point of view.”

Kathy Giannini (painter)
Kathy has been an AAWE member since 1991, though a long-distance one as she has mostly lived in the provinces since joining, bringing her kids up to Paris just to participate in our famous baseball picnics. Her day job is as an English teacher in the French school system, but her avocations are fiction writing and watercolor painting. Every summer, she attends a watercolor course run by Tufts University at their site in Talloires on Lake Annecy. Her subject matter often represents alpine scenery and picturesque Annecy where she resides.

Catherine Jullian (painter)
Longtime French resident and AAWE member since 1989, Catherine exchanged a fine arts major for art history, and only took up her brushes again 4 years ago (thanks in part to Kathy G, see above), eager to make up for lost time. Still developing a personal style, she works in several techniques, with a preference for oil and soft pastel. Her works are figurative, and she has a strong predilection for people as their theme.

Mae Mac Kenzie (painter)
Mae has been painting on and off since she moved to France 15 years ago but decided to make it her profession in 2003. Her work is a blend of highly observed detail and beautiful finishing, skills honed through her considerable experience in jewelry making and enameling, and her appreciation of the lovely loose brush work of painters such as Manet and Degas. She paints on commission, mainly children's portraits, though she is occasionally asked to paint an interior scene or a garden or a view of Paris for visiting Americans.

Sally Benoist (photographer)
Sally has been a member of AAWE since 1967. Her interest in black and white photography dates from the late 80's when she began studying photography at WICE. "Photography has taught me to see things I might never have noticed", she says. Shadows, shapes, silhouettes and "nature's perfect compositions" are among her favorite subjects. She has participated in group exhibitions in Paris and in Rueil-Malmaison, but she is grateful to AAWE for giving her the opportunity to hold her first one-photographer show in an exceptional setting.

Nanci Rivière (sculptor)
In 1991 Nanci received the AAWE Award enabling her to reproduce each sculpture in multiples. This exhibit shows three phases that she has gone through in the last 15 years. After working with clay for four years, she began sculpting marble. Movement became a focal point and in Phase 2 she started working with new material and new subjects; fighting Samoturi figures which pierce the air on tall rods expressing movement and emotion. She then tried Raku, the Japanese art of firing clay and her Raku Samoturi figures joined the group of “Emotions”. This past October, Nanci presented Phase 3: Interactive Installations (see photo) at Columbia University.

Judith Banon (painter)
Judith, who originally joined AAWE in 1981, studied Fine Arts at Mundelein College, Chicago, before coming to Paris. The discovery of contemporary artist Jean-Claude Langer, Vuillard’s portraits and Sennelier’s pastel sticks à l’écu drew her irresistibly to the medium in the early nineties. Children caught unaware or posing shyly, pears of burnished gold or frosty berries: whatever the subject, she paints its portrait in pastels, their rich palette and velvet layers bringing depth to her work. With private collectors here and in the US, Judith is delighted to have this opportunity to show a sampling of her art.

She studied at WICE, SPEOS and Parsons School of Design.
